On Columbus Day, 2024, the similarities between the Italian American immigrant experience and the migrant crisis are striking — especially in relation to crime.
Great piece. It's crucial to recognize the interconnectedness of our shared histories. Immigrant journeys, despite their diversity, often reveal a troubling pattern—groups that successfully assimilate may distance themselves from others trying to do the same, out of a lingering insecurity of their own position. This cycle of exclusion happens both across and within cultures. Empathy is key to breaking this pattern, but fear and division are often manipulated to maintain power and control. The challenge is to resist these divisions and build social harmony on our common experiences.
